"As a frequent business traveller, I am so tired of doing my part by researching accomodations that promise quality (in this case 3 stars) and value, and discovering that the reality come up short. It has a tremedous impact on the overall travel expeience.
The man at the desk, didn't greet me when I arrived, and was generally. unfriendly. It was 7 AM, since I took a redeye in to NY. After flying all night I was looking forward to a shower and a catnap before beginning my day of meetings. Despite the fact that I called them the day before to confirm my reservation and inform them of my arrival time--they said the didn't have a room for me and wouldn't have one till late afternoon. I had agreed before arrival to pay for the room from the evening before, even though I wouldn't arrive until the morning. When I insisted, they found me a room. It was dreary, and so small that the closet door was at the foot of the bed and could only be opened about 8" wide. There wasn't enough room to walk around the bed to get to the other side where the desk was.
I went down and asked for another room, which they found for me, and it was considerably better, only by contrast to the first one which was entirely unacceptable.
The hotel is old, and single elevator was extremely tiny and slow, meaning that I had to add on another 10 minutes travel time to get anywhere, in case the elevator was busy, which it often was. The front desk staff remained unfriendly throughout. I called and set a wakeup call for myself for the first morning, using the automatic system, which verified that the call was scheduled. I never got a call. Fortunately, I woke up on time. The next night, I called again and used the automatic system, and called the desk to ask if there had been trouble with the system. The operator told me that I had to get her to arrange it, which I did. I never got that call either.
Service is everything. The price for the hotel was very affordable, and the location very convenient, but I still expect to be treated courteously as a guest, and made to feel welcome. It's time to stop giving these kinds of establishments 3 stars, when they just don't rate. The hotel was also under construction, which guest should be informed about before arrival, and if anything, extra courtesies should be extended. The attitude was one of not caring, and indeed I also witnessed a woman at the front desk speak rudely to one of the housekeepers in the lobby, and criticize her even though I was standing nearby.
I hope these comments matter, but it sure doesn't seem that anyone cares."

"When I asked for a cab, they called a private car company that was
more expensive. Can't help but think that the hotel, or the staff, or both are getting a kickback. That said, the hotel is in a great location, the rate is good, and the staff was friendly. I was told this was a three star hotel and, well, no, I wouldn't give it that.
Still, the West Park Hotel is clean with an European flair."

"The temperature in New York was well below freezing. To compensate, they seemed to have turned the heating up to unbearable temperatures for such a small room, especially as we could not open the window. When we tried to turn the heater off, it spurted boiling water everywhere.
It was impossible to sleep as the heater clanked all night, and roadworks just outside the window started at around 3am each day, plus there were constant lorry deliveries throughout the night to the building opposite.
However, apparently improvements are planned ...."

"Our first room was tiny and very hot, with a terrible view, and radiator clanked all night long. When we switched it off, water spurted into the air. We were upgraded to a suite the next night and this was very nice. Very roomy, comfortable and clean, with no heating problems and a better view. We would recommend paying a little extra for a room - it's worth it."

"The staff were friendly, and although the room was a little small, for $90 per night, it was a great deal. I was a young single female traveller - the location was great; safe and across the road from the subway station."

"I would recommend it because it was affordable given the area. However, nothing very special about the stay. On the bright side, it was very quiet and adequently clean. Downside, room needed more lighting, updating, & toilet was about to break lose from the floor, couldn't catch a cab at hotel entrance and the one small elevator ran extremely slow and often over crowded.
Overall, our stay was just ok."

"The information about the hotel on the internet is out of date- there is no park view as advertized."
