"Very roomy, old-worrld charm, and proximity to the subway make this a great choice for the money."

"Sarah from England writes... stayed in one of the smaller rooms over New Year - excellent value in this respect as no additional surcharge for New Years Eve (we paid US$160++ per night). From other reviews suspected that we would have a room ending in 01 and this was the case but still had view of Empire State Building out of window so that was a nice surprise.
Positives - very clean, pleasant and helpful staff, excellent value for the time of our stay, free continental breakfast an unexpected bonus, modern style bathroom albeit very small, location very central so easy to explore both downtown and uptown sights.
Negatives - in-room safe was broken although this was not mentioned by the check-in desk, very temperamental air-con system - regularly came on for no apparent reason and quite noisy, location just off 5th Avenue and quite a lot of traffic noise (presume some other rooms would be quieter although then may not overlook Empire State Bldg).
Would recommend for value for money at New Year but if I stayed there again would probably look for a bigger room with 2 x double beds just to give a bit more space and presumably a slightly larger bathroom."

"Definitely take up the hotel's offer to arrange a car back to the airport. The car arrived on time, the driver knew all the short cuts, the vehicle was clean, comfortable and spacious and it was only $45 plus toll. The cab firms advertising in the free magazines provided were hopeless - simply didn't turn up and then denied taking the booking!"

"extra bedding (the convertable sofa) was HORRIBLE (Rm. 1103)... lumpy, torn, hard and UNMADE
in-house dining room surprisingly good
excellent access to subway system (Lexington Ave. Line) 1.5 blocks away to east on 32nd St.
Staff need better English language skills"

"My reservation was in their system for the wrong dates--so my credit card was charged for a date earlier in the month as a no-show. I had made my reservation on line in October...
Ordered ice (none available on the floors) and had to call twice because service was slow.
Called to order clean sheets (due to a spill) prior to going out to dinner, and they were never attended to."

"Nice quiet hotel but would not have a room that faces the street as the room curtains would not shut."

"The reception staff were very obnoxious and unfriendly on the point of rude at times. The doorman was very friendly and helpful.
We were charged the $30 occupancy tax twice. Once by yourselves and once by the hotel. They would not accept that we had paid this previously.
The maid service was very good."

"We stayed at the Avalon for five nights in November. The location is excellent (a block from the Empire State Building and 10 minutes walk from Times Square). We had a Superior Queen room (which I think is the cheapest one) and it was fantastic - bigger than many hotels we've stayed in in the UK and with a good-sized marble bathroom and a view of the Empire State building. The only slightly negative comment I'd make is regarding breakfast - not enough tables meaning you had to wait at busy times, and only a basic selection of cereals and pastries, but at the end of the day, its included in the room rate (unlike most NYC hotels which seem to be room only). Overall, we agree with other positive comments on this site - the Avalon is a real gem in a great location and represents excellent value (bearing in mind that this is New York!!) - We wouldn't hesitate in recommending it!"

"Very much liked the free champagne and including breakfast in the hotel price. You have an excellent concept, but the rooms need a refreshing and better decor. I said above I would not recommend your hotel. If the room decor and furniture was upgraded, I would rave about your place and it could become a favorite."

"The potential for this hotel is definitely there. HOWEVER, would recommend an early check-in ... we were confirmed for a non-smoking room with two beds, and got the proverbial "last room" which was one bed, smoking, even though we requested it on the form AND called to reconfirm. And at midnight when we finally checked in, the night clerk was practically comotose and offered absolutely no suggestions or help of any kind, except to demand a credit card."

"This hotel was very good as it was near Penn station and right across
the street from the Empire State building. It was very easy to walk
up 5th Ave. and onto Central park. Very near also for Times square
and all the shows.
The complimentary breakfast was very good and the reception staff
and door men were pleasant and helpful."
