"The accomodations were very nice in themselves, but we had 3 problems with the food/drinks/service:
1. My husband ordered an Irish Coffee from the bistro. The waitress made it instead of the bartender. When she served it, she asked if it was okay. My husband had to tell her that it was supposed to have whipped cream and sugar in it. Instead of serving him a new one, she added whipped cream in front of us to the one she gave him, and put sugar on the table. It was by this time lukewarm. He was charged full price for it.
2. The breakfast prices are very steep. While it is sometimes the case that the breakfast buffet is included in the price of the room (as it is in the Ritz Hotel in Madrid), we expected that this was not. However, at $27.50 the buffet was the most expensive item on the menu and in our view, extraordinarily high for what it included. So we opted for Eggs Benedict instead. The waiter served us the eggs in 5 minutes, saying he had "rushed it through" for us. I make Eggs Benedict. There is no way it can be done in 5 minutes. These had been warmed in the microwave. (The English muffins were rubbery, a telltale sign.) The eggs themselves were okay (though one of my husband's had no yolk) and the Hollandaise was good. But, for the price they were not worth it. Also, $6.50 per coffee which is not refilled is high.
3. When we checked out, we were charged full price for the room I had booked at a discount over the internet. We told the clerk, who seemed not to have a record for the internet booking and thought that we had upgraded the day before we checked in. I sent my husband to our luggage for the read-out. While he was gone, the clerk settled it to our satisfaction and with courtesy. However, we could not help noticing that, of the four clerks who were checking people out, three were involved in billing disputes with customers - us, plus a very upset man who was speaking in Spanish and an Italian gentleman next to us who was patiently, but firmly, trying to get an item-by-item accounting. This may have been coincidence, but our thought was that it may be more usual than not. We most probably would have let our dispute go, except that, with our feeling very much overcharged in your restaurants, it was basically the last straw. Neither of us could remember staying in a first-class hotel before where we felt so overcharged for the food, even if the prices were, in the end, comparable.
We have a suggestion: when your prices for food are what they currently are, the product should be superb instead of at best passable. It also would make sense for return business to make breakfast "break-even" for hotel guests, at least as far as some items are concerned. But, perhaps you needn't worry about return business. If so, that is fine. Also, it isn't that we didn't enjoy the room and the ambiance. But, not enough to return. Next time, we have decided to try other hotels in the area.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Kolker"

"As a big fan of the Plaza, I was extremely disappointed with my last stay there. The service for the three days was horrible. I went to Rio DeJaneiro last May and stayed at the CopaCabana Palace which is also a 5 Star hotel. The Plaza did not even compare.
I am not sure how often the standards for the hotel are assessed, however, the Plaza should not have a 5 Star rating based on my last experience there. The hotel is expensive and with that you expect a high level of service which just was not there."

"Men's spa was not working - a MAJOR reason for choosing this hotel. Mould on ceiling of bathroom. Wallpaper looks very tired in rooms & corridors. Some check-in staff not welcoming, but porters were friendly. Overall disappointed, will not be staying again. My lasting impression was of a tired hotel in need of a facelift."
